BREATH in his face is a very good, reliable trigger for a BITE - so unless U > want < a facial bite, which is not only painful and expensive, but means giving up any second-career as a male-model, PLEASE Do NOT Do That.
the reason dogs SNAP at 'breath' in their face?
cuz it usually means that another animal is about to chomp == their == face!
if U want Ur dog to trust U, and feel relaxed and comfy, so that U can pull thorns from their feet, a splinter from their gums, or a painful burr out of their petticoats, Please Stop Teasing and Threatening Ur dog by 'breathing' in their face!!
[and if U are bitten, please don't ask me for sympathy: mine is all for the dog.]
ABOUT WIND FROM AUTO-RIDES:
please close the window! yes, i know he 'loves' it, U already said so... but i'm sure Ur dog ALSO loves:
* being able to see
* normal hearing
* pain-free ears
* un-blocked, infection-free sinuses
the air around a car is called the 'slipstream'. it moves a LOT faster than the car does; that menas that, when Ur dog sticks their head into that fast-flowing river of air, EVERYthing in it, mocro-debris of all kinds, is RAM-JETTED into Ur dog's vulnerable eyes, ears, and nose.
chronic infections, eardrum damage, swollen and painful ear canals, sinus and nasal infections, and even abscessed teeth can get their start in that slipstream.
so get the dog into the car with the windows SHUT when he climbs in - and keep'em that way!
BTW: a vet-tech here in Va Beach told me abt an 18 MO M Golden, who was coming here w/ his family, a young married couple, for a 2wk vacation.
they were 2 exits from the Oceanfront, having traveled all the way from Michigan, when the dog began to 'scream' in the back-seat [wife's description]. she turned to see him flailing around, with blood running down his face.
she and her DH pulled off at the very next exit, went to a gas station, and got directions to the nearest vet.
luckily, it was less than 2 miles. UNluckily, the dog had been hit in the eye by a large insect, probably a June bug or a cicada, and had EXPLODED the globe of his eye - that's what the wife saw running down his cheek.
after the dog was operated on and comfortable, unconscious, the vet insisted that they call a cab; neither of them was in any shape to drive, they were both in shock.
the car was left in the vet's lot while they stayed at a nearby hotel.
2 days later, with a big vet bill and no other sight-seeing, they went home.
their dog, not yet 2, had one eye, and was so traumatized that the car he so loved was now a whining, cringing misery.
since the tech WORKED in that office, and saw both the dog and the owners, when she told me this i got tears in my eyes - cuz she got so upset, i caught it... and it had BEEN Three Years.
she still remembered the stunned look on the faces of the owners, sitting in the waiting room while the vet stitches the dog's eye shut!! owww-w-w...

I don't know. My dog does the same thing. He also barks at the blow dryer if I try to blow it at him. Our friends' dog is the opposite. She love wind/air in her face. You could blow dry her or blow on her all day and she would just sit there and be happy.

Your dog knows that you are just having fun with him, I will bring to your attention that I read that humans stink really bad to dogs. Yes, I know we think dogs stink but really, humans really smell bad to dogs but they love us anyway even with horribile breath.
