I want to visit Australia and New Zealand next December and early January.
I want to try out Couchsurfing. Has anyone any good or negative comments about this?

The website www.couchsurfers.com crashed a while ago, not too sure if it's up and running again.
www.globalfreeloaders.com is the same type of website.
The concept has the positives of meeting the actual residents of a country and experiencing more than the backpacker staying in a hostel. The negatives - many travellers had mapped out a year of travel using couchsurfers and were subsequently stranded after the site crashed. Couchsurfing is when you are siting in a room on a couch watching TV and surfing the channels with the remote control. Not at all what you may think it is

give it a go. use a vinyl couch as they tend not to absorb as much water.
