You usually use a dial indicator in setting up a machine tool to assure that the work-bed or platen is true and square to the directional axes of the machine tool. By doing this, you are assuring that you are not cutting slight tapers into your part by how you have your part mounted on your platen. This is important for the second and subsequent passes on a part that has multiple set-ups.

Dial indicators are very good for "relative" measurements as opposed to "absolute" measurements.
