I have an 8 year old cat that was having problems eating a few weeks back. I was feeding him one night, and then he started growling, and running like he was in pain or just plain mad. Every once in a while he does the same thing without being fed. It looks like he is gagging after eating something disgusting, after about 10 - 15 seconds he is fine. I think he is trying to extract a hairball(s), and can't. Is there anything that I can give him for it? I feed him Dry, and Wet food. I am feeding him milk, without any problems. I will be taking him next week to get checked out, but i was wondering if anybody has had similar problems.

Hairball treatment. You give him a half inch long piece as it squeezes out of the tube, and it helps grease the works so he passes the hairball the other way!

I've never seen a cat growl because of hairballs, they sometimes will make a strange meow and then sound like they are gagging as they throw the hairball up. Is he having normal stools in consistency and amount? There are preparations sold by the vets offices and through pet product catalogs that can be given to a cat to help with hairballs. One thing you can give at home is to mix a teaspoon of butter into the cat's food. (Don't overdo it though, because dairy products except for yogurt and cottage cheese, tend to give a cat diarrhea). At your cat's age, its a good idea to have him vet checked because dental problems (pain from problems such as an abscessed tooth could cause the kinds of problems you describe) or throat or esophageal problems are not uncommon in older cats.

As a breeder of the Birman cat hairball is a nightmare! I have tried so many things to help but so far the one that seems to help them bring up the hairball is one without them being sick daily is science plan hairball control with fresh water daily (Cows milk is not good for cats) the other think that is great is cat grass this is easy to grow and can buy from most pet stores, this helps a cat to be sick.
I hope he starts to feel better soon.

go to a pharmacy and pick up "mineral oil" NOT BABY OIL, mineral oil.

It is a laxative and may give kitty the runs, so don't be alarmed by that.

You cat probably has a blockage hat won't move. Cats coah up hairballs because they can't "pass" them. YOu want to help kitty pass the blockage.

Fed him a teaspoon of the oil 2 times a day and you shoudl be results in about 2 days.

if not, take him to a vet, as it may need to be remove surgically.

most times, they hairball with come out itself eventually. It DOES scare kitty and the growling and running is your cat trying to "outrun" the situation.

He's unhappy and the way he deals with it is trying to escape.

Most adult cats can't process cows milk, so that won't help the situation at all.

Try the oil, and if you don't get any results, see the vet ASAP.

Give him a dap or two of petroluem jelly (vaseline). You can either apply it directly on his tongue or smear some on the outside of his paws. He'll lick the paws and injest the the jelly. If there is hairball that he is trying to cough up and it is too big, hopefully, the ball will pass through his intestines and out aided by the grease of the petroluem jelly. Another option is to get hairball jelly from the pet store made precisely for hairball problems. They come in tubes like tootpaste in different flavors. My cats like to lick this directly off my fingers.

Shouldnt feed a cat milk..gives them the runs. Give him water only.

hairball? try Purina one, "advance hairball control" dry food. Blue packaged.

You might also like trying giving an egg yolk once a week.

First of all you shouldn't give your cat cows milk you can make him very ill!Try feeding him some oily fish (sardines, mackerel) not tuna, this is also very bad. This might help.Grooming your cat every day will also help prevent hairballs. If the problem doesn't get any better you should get him checked over by the vet,as he's getting older it could be a different health problem.Hope this helps!
