not if you register as a charity ( fed and state )
or get a business license ( and collect sales tax )

why don't you seek all of the help that is out there if you truly can't afford it ( start with your church if you have one - also talk to the doctor about writing off the bill if you have true hardship )

No you can't. This would be unethical. You are not a non profit charity or a 'cause'. You are fundraising for other reasons and that is taking advantage of people's charitable giving. You would also be required to pay income taxes on the money and if you were not upfront with people about it being for you specifically you could be charged with fraud and criminally prosecuted.

As long as you don't lie or mislead anyone about what you are going to do with the money. Bacisally, you can't put a picture of a tortured animal on the box...
