Ok, This spring, I am going to Canada for the first time. I am going to Golden, BC. There are 2 airports that my friend says he can pick me up at. Calgary and Edmonton, however, the prices are around $600-$700+ I can't exactly afford that. I was thinking maybe I could fly into Spokane, WA (or another closer to the border). How far is Spokane from the border, and are you allowed the cross the border by something other than an plane (car, foot)? And do you have to pay to cross the border?! Also, how long does it take to get a passport?!

My friend who is picking me up prefers that I fly to edmonton, or second choice, calgary... so I don't need info on those, just info on flying into US then crossing the border. Thanks!

Americans don't need a passport to visit Canada. It is free to cross the border and Spokane is , if I can remember correctly, at least 2-3 hour drive to the border. Why not fly into Vancouver, B.C. and hop on a connecting flight to either Kamloops or Kelowna. Golden is about a 4 hour drive from Kelowna, 3 hours from Kamloops. Try Westjet.ca for flights. Calgary and Edmonton are east of Golden, Calgary is closer , about a 4 hour drive . Good luck, enjoy your stay.

P,S.
Thought I might be able to help you but your choices are beyond help, sorry.

PPS.
Now that you have included your departure city, you've made it a little easier. Would make more sense to fly directly into Vancouver, B.C., then you can take a bus to Golden. It is about a 6-7 hour bus ride and you clear customs at the airport. If you insist on flying to a U.S. city, Seattle would be a better choice than Spokane, from there, it is only a couple hours by bus to Vancouver and transfer to another for the trip to Golden. Customs is a minor inconvenience, please don't fret over it. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to clear. Enjoy your stay.

Calgary is BY FAR closer to Golden than Edmonton or Vancouver! Spokane is far too... the highway from Creston north to Golden takes close to a full day to drive.

I would fly into Vancouver and take a connector flight to Kamloops or even Kelowna. I suggest your check out www.westjet.ca or if you're thinking of flying into Kelowna you could even try www.aircanada.ca. Both Kamloops and Kelowna are closer than Calgary or Edmonton - neither of which makes any sense to fly into it.

The best times to look for air fare is on Wednesday night after midnight. Also go to the different airline web sites to find fares. It takes about 6 weeks to get a passport.

Without knowing your City of Departure - it is impossible to answer you accurately.
Spokane makes no sense at all.
I am guessing that you should be flying into Vancouver.
