The Canon GL2 is highly underrated. A lot of film school students will probably recommend the Canon XL2 but the GL2 is cheaper by nearly $1,500 (making it well below your budget at $2,000 on Amazon) and has a better picture quality. It captures skin tones and overall picture a lot less like a hidden camera show and more like film. The reason the XL2 is more often recommended is because it has an interchangeable lens system, has been used on many popular independent films, and is bulkier making it feel more professional. Also, you can even get a whole package with wide angle lens adapter, tripods, filters etc. and still be $300 below budget http://tinyurl.com/yluquc . In the end, go with the GL2. It can't be beat with less than $10,000.

There's more to making a movie than just a camera. Have you factored in other equipment and software that you may need such as:
- a video tripod and/or monopod
- a steadicam setup
- sound equipment
- lighting equipment
- portable power equipment
- editing software
- a big, big PC with lots of disk
- etc.
Some of this you may well be able to do without. However you will need a big PC. DV takes up 10Gb of disk per 10 minutes. This does not include work space.
You can never go wrong with Sony. A 1CCD camera will give you good results, even though the purists will tell you that you need a 3CCD camera. Many of today's reality TV shows use a lot of footage shot with 1CCD cams. Can you tell the difference? I didn't think so.
The critical decision will be whether or not to go HD. I don't think the market penetration for HD is high enough to take on the added expense.

Hi,
I shop a lot and to save time and money I use cheapest prices search engine. Almost every merchant is there and over a million consumer written reviews. You will find many other ways that will help you with questions.
You can shop online or you can go to a merchant and use the toll free phone number if you feel more comfortable shopping like that.
There are merchant reviews, product reviews, compare by brand and a lot more. I hope I helped you and I wish you good luck.

I'll bet you could make the most money from of an amateur porn film. Otherwise create your ultimate vision. After watching pulp fiction, I can tell that Tarantino simply took elements from other movies he loved and merged them into one movie.
I admire your efforts. You must be serious to invest that kind of money. I imagine you love watching movies too. Which one are your favorites?

A Sony PD-170 is a good choice...unless you want a HD Cam.
