It's the bit that joins your upper lip to your top gum, if you put your tongue between your upper lip & teeth you can feel it!

I'm not asking because I need it clipped, both my daughters who are 2 & 1 haven't got it. They have gaps in their teeth & right now it's going through that gap & joining behind their teeth, I'm concerned! How have I only just noticed this!?!?!?

"upper labial frenulum" (the weird piece of skin between your top lip and gum)

Its called the frenum.

If it is going in between your daughters' teeth and causing a gap it will need to be clipped. A periodontist can do this very simple procedure with a laser.

We had a mother bring her 1 year-old into the office and she felt awful that she hadn't noticed it either. We advised her to wait until her daughter was about 5 years old to do anything about it.

You can always take them to see your dentist or even an orthodontist (some orthodontists don't charge for an initial exam). It's really nothing to worry about right now. :)

It is called "trouble" when you reach 60 years of age and the dentist has to clip it to fit your new dentures. Very painful! Good luck to you!

I don't have one either. think its caused your philtrim. it is probably a tendon. take them to the docs if you are worried. they may need to see a speech therapist to assess all is ok. the fact you have only just noticed is a good thing cause its obviously not effected them
