amniocentesis (am-nee-oh-sen-tee-sis):

A procedure for finding certain disorders in a fetus during pregnancy. In amniocentesis, a small amount of the salty liquid that surrounds the fetus in the amniotic sac is drawn out through a needle inserted into the mother's abdomen. The fluid generally contains some isolated cells from the fetus. These cells are analyzed to detect abnormalities in the chromosomes of the fetus, such as Down's syndrome, and may also be used to judge some other conditions, such as the maturity of the fetus's lungs.

The womb of a pregnant women contains an a thin membranous amniotic sac which in turn contains a liquid called amniotic fluid which surrounds the developing baby, and protects it like a cushion. This Liquid also contains vital substances. Some foetal cells and elements are also contained in the amniotic fluid.

In case of a problem during pregnancy, this amniotic fluid can be drawn through a syringe and analysed for the target problem.

It can reveal any deficiency in the mother, a malfunction / mal formation of the baby, any disease condition of the mother / baby, health of the baby, sex of the baby, overall progress of the pregnancy etc .etc.

The process of drawing and testing the amniotic fluid is called amniocentisis.
