Good question. My dog came from Romania, was partly trained there. She was imported to the US by Joe Clingan (mypolicedogs.com). Joe was a K9 supervisor at Fort Collins, Colorado and he trained her also. My K9 finished training in FL, but again it was with a K9 supervisor.
You don't have to be a police officer; however, that it where you will get your experience. Use the two links below and contact the USPCA as well as Clingan's site.

It's not that simple and technically you do not have to join the Police to be a Police K-9 trainer. If you were certified and world renowned then maybe you have a chance without joining the Police. If you were to join the Police on the other hand, you don't just go right into being a K-9 unit. You have to put in your time in patrol and work your way up after of course passing the academy. And if you do work your way up to becoming a K-9 officer then, yes, the department supplies you with a young dog that you train, work with everyday and yes, you have to take care of it too. The dog becomes a part of your family, your best friend and your best partner. Go for it!! Good Luck!!

you have some things confused.
The people who actually train the dogs are from kennels where they just train dogs normally. These are private companies that train various dogs. You would not take the dogs home.
Some police depatments also have kennels and train thier own dogs.
K-9 police officers work with thier dogs and some get to take thier dogs home, but for many the dog stays in the police kennels where the officer picks up the dog at the start of the shift.
So it can just vary by the department

You wouldnt have to join the police department, I have a german shepherd right now and i actually wanted my dog to go through some of the training that the police dogs do. I actually met at a park, a group of people that were training german shepherds to become service dogs, and one of the guys daughters had learned how to train the dogs and what not, so we got her to train our dog. i do know though. when i was working as a receptionist somewhere, before we moved into the new building. they used to use it as a training building. not ALL the dogs come over from germany. they actually do train them in the states also. I beleive the dog would be your responsibility during training, and then the dogs go to an officer or whoever and become THEIR responsibility. i dont want to say im 100 percent correct on this. you might need to actually speak with someone who has is part of the k-9 unit. they might be able to get you more information or get you intouch with someone who can help you out. good luck

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMQfh
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

It depends. In some places the dogs get trained by a private company and then handed over to the police. You will have to check.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/jlFSp
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

You can be a K-9 officer, meaning you would have to live with the dog and take it to work with you. Trainers are different, they pick the dogs and begin working with them from day 1, then they hand them over to the cops.

I think most police dogs are coming from Germany and they are trained there.
