Can anyone tell me what an ac3 codec is and why it needs to be installed. thanks

ac3 format is sort of a recording from a mic/cell phone.

It is a media codec. Meaning it tells your computer how to interpret the video (or in AC3s case, sometimes audio) and provide it for you on your screen. It decodes the video so that your computer can display it.
