in the passenger seat, after being handcuffed, the other cop got in the guy's car with the girl and drove off, was that supposed to happen? This took place in Los Angeles

C.M I'm not jumping to conclusions (unlike you) this was a grown up girl over 18 so you were wrong, relax it's just a simple question. I was curious, and cops can do whatever they want to.

Geez, I can't believe how people blow this out of proportion, this is a perfect example of how nasty some individulas can be, it is just a question. The most ridiculous answer was the last one, that one takes the cake.

that is perfectly legal. he would have been taking the girl home and putting the car back. legally.

Hmmm...typically, the car gets towed (expenses charged to the owner) and even if the girl was under-aged, the cop would call for back-up and have a female person in authority escort the girl to a residence or where some guardian could come and get her. If she is an adult, they would have someone at the station call for her a pickup or again, have a female transport her to the station - not drive the guy's car. The legal implications on that alone could get the cop in trouble.

L.A. cops...hmmm...that's scary. L.A. law...scarier.

The cop was probably doing the guy a favor so he wouldn't have to pay for the car being impounded and the girl probably had the money to bail him out. There are any number of reasonable explinations for what happened. They may have also not wanted to call CPS, but was taking the girl to the police station where she could be picked up by another parent. Don't jump to conclusions. And don't say you weren't!!! We all know what you were thinking!!!

at the end of the day- we dont know why they did it.

- but i think a likely thing is the girl may also have been drinking, and the cop took her and the car home so when they sober up the guy can get out and pay off his ticket...

endless creativity/ variety of possibilities- but the simplest usually is the correct one. cops do record all stops on radio and usually on video. If its a big issue to you you can call in to the station and ask about it.

I wouldnt care to get involved myself unless it looked like the girl was unwilling to be driven/ or resisting ect. It is a case of not really your business.

Gee, after all these other answers...........I simply would have assumed that the cop was giving the girl a courtesy ride to where ever she needed to go.

The alternative would be to arrest the guy and haul him off -- then what happens with the girl? Do they just abandon her on the spot??? Think about it.

if the "girl" was not old enough to drive the registered owner may have directed them to bring the vehicle to jail for the arrested subject.

No, the car should have been towed. You know, cops can do whatever they want...who knows what they could have been up to.
