Well, no. For the low income people, that would be a tax INCREASE, which doesn't seem right. And the really rich would save a bundle. OK, I'd save a fair amount - that doesn't seem right either.
And 10% wouldn't give anywhere near the revenue that's collected now (see even the numbers the fairtax people have come up with) - how would the government run?

I think if a 5% flat tax was put into law( 5% regardless of your income) the government could pay off the national debt and provide us all with free health care--but the catch is the big business making $500,000,000.00 per year would pay the 5% the same as the working Joe that makes $15,000.00 per year.
The tax load would be evenly carried by all ---yes even the govt. officials would get to pay 5%

I think Bamma is a little bit on edge there...At any rate, the 10% tax rate would theoretically be ideal and appears to be common sense. But do you think the government has ever operated on common sense - no. Over time, there have been so many actuarial estimates on the benefits of various tax consequences, the whole taxation scenario has become so convoluted, I don't think people know where it begins and ends.

The theory is nice...the adoption and execution of such a program might prove to be a headache, though. I pay 28%, so I'd personally be in favor of paying 10%, but would that raise enough cash to run the nation?
