I think you're refering to the USA, making most of the_supreme_father's answer useless. I don't believe the USA has an official language (oddly enough) although English is highly supported, and Spanish is increasingly supported as well as contested. If we did have English as a national language, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't see nearly as many signs in Spanish as we do, I think the only reason signs are required to be in Spanish is because we don't have an official language and we have so many Spanish speakers here.
In case you were referring to all of the Americas, Canada's official Languages are French and English, the USA has none, Brazil has Portugese and all other American countries have Spansih.

EDIT for JDGuru: There is no such language as "Mexican." Thats like saying Americans dont speak English, they speak "American."

It's English, but only by one vote. German was about to be the official language in the 18th century, but English won by a single vote!

Well, in Canada they speak english and French, in USA they speak english and ( in spite of reluctance and hatred from the english speakers ) Spanish.
From there to the south, most countries speak Spanish. In Haiti they speak French and Creole. In Brasil they speak Portuguese.
Besides this, in many countries of South America, many people speak Indian dialects, like Quechua and Guarani
