My older cat almost always sleeps on her back and my younger one does it on occasion. I would think that'd be uncomfortable due to the way a cat's body is structured.

It is a way cats sleep. You see, if they sleep like us humans,it would be uncomfortable because it hurts their spine. And if they sleep on the front it would be okay but they rarely do it.To them, sleeping on their backs are comfortable. My cat sleeps like that and he loves to cover his eyes with his paws when he sleeps like that.Guess that way IS comfortable.

i have 3 cats, and 2 at my moms house. out of ALL my cats, and even years before, ive only had one cat that sleeps on his back, some will lay like that for a min or so but not actually sleep. we have a cat named bigfoot. hes a BIG cat, and hes on a diet now, but he would always sleep on his back and i asked the vet about it, and he actually said its probly helping him breathe better. when he would sleep regular, he would make these weird noises. so we brought him in, figuring it was something to do with his weight. so not sure of the size of ur cat, but i know thats what i was told about my guy. lol.

I look at a dog or cat stretched out on it's back sleeping peacefully with it's legs up in the air dreaming away with a smile. I think to myself: This animal doesn't know anything evil in the world.

I don't know about discomfort becuase if that were true, then your cat (and my neighbor's cat) will not be sleeping on their backs. I noticed that fairly fat cats like to do this - sleep on their backs. Probably the position cools the cat's tummy which can get pretty warm when he is lying on it. My cat does it on occassion but purely to look cute for me and hopefully earn a treat.

Cats like to sleep in very strange places and positions over-all. Usually places that are warm. Sometimes you wonder exactly HOW they're able to SLEEP like that. It almost looks painful XD

http://kattforum.se/viewtopic.php?t=89436 has plenty of pictures of cats in various sleeping places and positions. The text is in Swedish, but the pictures can be amusing to look at =)

This one is the most amusing one, though XD

The same reason some people prefer to sleep on their backs vs. their stomachs...

This is a very vulnerable position for a cat.
By letting its guard like this it is showing total trust of you and is completely relaxed.
