Is Tarzan's beard the only "fact" disturbing you in the story?
Of course somebody growing in the wilderness should have long hair, beard, mustache as he wouldn't have scissors to trim them.

i seem to recall in the original story tarzan actually shaved so he would look more like a man than an ape after he discovered the truth about himself... he used the knife he always carries with him...
