I have a driving anxiety that I have been dealing with the past 3 years. First, you'll need to figure out the origins on why you have a fear of driving in the first place. For me, I realized that I get panic attacks while driving alone and stuck in traffic. For my reason, I was used to always having someone with me all the time when I was growing up, and when I finally moved out of my parents' house and on my own... I developed this anxiety.
I still have the anxiety once in awhile but it's not as bad as it used to be. When my anxiety does kick in, these are the following things that help me calm down:
a.) blast the music loud and sing
b.) call someone to keep you company
You want to get your mind to relax and to think of positive thoughts. If you feed your mind with negative thoughts of driving, it'll control your body by giving you the shakes, shortness of breathe, feeling claustraphobic. So you want to focus on positive things if you can.
You're not alone in this. You'll be OK and you'll phase out of it eventually.

Honestly you just have to get in the car, and drive a little. Just go for a short ride even if it just a couple blocks away from where you started. I don't know if you have had a traumatic experience that is causing this. But I would start out slow, don't drive in a big city right away if you can help it.
I was terrified of driving anywhere near semis... now after a few years, I barely notice.

I'm not religious, but I do have heavy sociological / anthropological background. If you feel the need to "fear" your God, then it's because you feel guilty for something, or you want to feel victimized. Most folks don't fear their God. They love their God. God is like the ultimate leader. As Machiavelli said, a good leader must be both loved and feared. If he is just loved, then people will still do what they want against his wishes at times. If he is just feared, then they won't love their own lives, only doing what he wants out of fear of ramifications. If they love and fear him, then they will do what he wants out of love and respect first, and out of fear second. Let me try to use a different analogy for God... God, in most peoples' eyes, is like a good parent. A good parent uses 2 parts love and 1 part discipline to ensure people lead a good life. 1 part love is unconditional. God loves you unconditionally, because you are his creation. (Just as a parent loves their child unconditionally). 1 part love is for positive reinforcement. God shows you love to reward your good behavior. This is what most folks call "blessings", "miracles", etc. Parents do the same with them children; give them hugs when they succeed. 1 part discipline is used for negative reinforcement. God punishes people when they've been bad. Parents do the same to children. Now, most people will follow a Godly life simply because they respect and love God due to 1 part unconditional love, and 1 part positive reinforcement. If that doesn't work then they fear the 1 part discipline. However, what's "blessing" and "punishment" from God is subjective. Different religions, and even individuals, may see something as a blessing while others see it as a curse. Everyone can see whatever they want into something. When a mother hugs a child, it's pretty tangible that it's a hug. But, when a person finds $5 on the street is that a blessing? What if it just enables them to do something bad? I think the better way to look at God is that he gives people chances. The $5 is an opportunity. How the person chooses to use that opportunity dictates whether it's a "blessing" or "curse".

I hope you can face your nerves and learn. Good luck! Send me some pointers :)

Hi little one... I am 57, and always was scared to death of driving..so , to 'save lives' on the road, I chose to never learn how...I just can't get over the fear of oncoming traffic, and I felt that if I did learn to drive, I would end up killing someone or myself..so, to solve the problem..I just don't drive...and I have to admit, the good part is, I am in great health as a result of walking everywhere I go...if it isn't a life or death thing...really give it some thought and be true to yourself..most people will think I am eccentric...but you know, I just have to be true to me and not worry about what others think...Have a happy holiday!

Have someone take you to a huge parking lot or open paved space with nobody else in sight around. Get in the driver's seat and get used to handling the car. Exposure usually works in reducing fear, but you need the exposure.

Maybe it is independence that you fear. Driving yourself and getting around on your own is a true hallmark of independence, and perhaps it is this that you fear more.
Would you rather have to depend on public transportation the rest of your life? Or have to depend on other people to get you where you need to go?
Do you cook for yourself? Balance your own checkbook? Do your own work? Make your own bed and take care of yourself without any assistance from anyone else?
If you answered "yes" to all of these, then you can learn to drive as part of your independence.
If you answered "no" to a majority of these, then perhaps it really IS independence that you fear the most! Do you REALLY want someone else taking care of you the rest of your life?
