sometimes in school, i get the idea that people think i am "special" (mentally, that is). and it's something that has been bothering me. i know that i am not but i can get where they might be getting this idea. i am usually quiet and sometimes walk in the halls by myself but every other time i am with friends. some of my teachers will sort of talk to me in what i think is an overfriendly tone. and some kids will imply that im retarded but not directly. When im not with my friends, i tend to keep to myself and when i do talk, its not interesting or i will say something stupid, but with my friends, i am very vocal and outgoing. Am i being paranoid or am i actually retarded?

I'm not a doctor but from your question it sounds like you are a normal kid going through some social issues. As you grow, you will learn (like all of us) how to handle different social situations. I won't worry but if you like, you can speak to your school counselor and they can give you some tips to help you feel better. Good luck and enjoy your youth :)

Being socially challenged does not make you mentally challenged.

Ask yourself this:

In School, are you prgressing along at the same pace as other children your age?
If the answer is yes, then its a misperception of other people.

If the answer is no, then ask yourself this:

Are you really applying yourself? Do you try and fail or are you failing to try?

And these things you say that are "stupid" is it simply a lack of knowledge or are you incapable of learning?

I believe your capable of learning or you wouldnt understand that you responses are "stupid" as you say.

If youre capable of learning, then its just a matter of gettng your freinds and family to help you by teaching you how to conduct yourself around strangers.

You'd be better off asking someone who knows you - like a trusted friend. It's possible that you have body language that communicates the wrong thing. Regardless, try not to worry too much about what other people think! It's that kind of self-consciousness that makes people awkward, nervous, and shy in the first place.

If you are poised enough to ask this question, you're ok. Lots of people are shy or awkward, especially in their teenage years. This can give the impression of being slow, even though you're fine. If other people's behavior towards you really bothers you, you can consider getting a counsellor or a therapist to help you work through the awkwardness. If not, that's ok too. Cliche as it is, as long as you're happy, that's what really matters.

If you have enough IQ to reliaze that you may seem retarded to other people your probably not retarded at all. Almost everyone Imeet asks me if I have ADD but I'm just naturally and normally hyper. :)
