I did my master's degree project on this topic. NASCAR needs an image makeover badly. As you said, there are millions of people who see the NASCAR fan as a stereotypical hick from the south who drinks Budweiser. The various motor sports definitely have different images. For example, I was in the infield/pits at a CART race a few years ago and there were white linen tablecloths, fresh flowers, wine, etc. at each team's facilities. Although, food trends are changing, you are more likely to see burgers and Coke at a NASCAR race.
Another factor is not just fans, but sponsors. There are some big companies out there who have not discovered what Lowe's, Home Depot, Nextel, and others know--NASCAR is big business and can bring you lots of brand-loyal customers.
NASCAR is trying--having celebrities at its events, including last night's banquet, but still has a long way to go especially if they want to fill the stands at a track on Staten Island. (They will build it--the Frances have a way of getting what they want.)
NASCAR stars are just not as well known as some other sports. In some ways, this is good because athletes are often associated with bad examples. However, NASCAR has few incidents of drug abuse, felony arrests, gun play, etc.
In New York's defense, there are so many things to do there, NASCAR has a lot of established competition. I believe that is another reason it is popular in smaller markets.
NASCAR needs to find someone to make its image over (think Lee Iacocca and Chrysler).

I think it goes even deeper, all the way back to the Civil War era, where Southerners were looked upon as stupid and illiterate. Some still do, although many do not. I have met many Yankees who were top-notch and had no such feelings, but the underlying feelings are still there for many. And also true is that other sports were there long before NASCAR ever came into being, so they have a lot of catching up to do. But white wine and linen tableclothes in the infield? Pleeaaseee!!!

You are right. It is still looked at like it is just for rednecks. I thought the same until I went to a race to give it a shot and to my surprise I loved it. It was great. It just wasn't the race but the experience of the whole race. I think if more people just gave it a shot and went to a race they might change their minds and views on Nascar. Now as far as people in new york I think there is just to many other sports going on there for them to give Nascar a chance.

I have lived in the State of NY all my life. I have never set foot in NYC so I won't pretend to understand them. I have been a NASCAR fan since the 1960's and I followed Dale Sr. from his rookie year to his untimely death. Many NY residents enjoy the sport. Don't paint us with a single brush stroke.

I've never been to New York but I bet if a track was built there, it'd sell out. Everyone I have ever met from New York were nice people, and I bet NASCAR would do great there.
