Atheists: is this not a fair question?

Question

I asked the following question and got several thumbs down. You find it offensive? Is it not a fair question? Let's be intellectually honest.

"How did the universe come into existence? All by itself? Without any cause?"

Atheists simply can not accept the fact that there are things they don't know and can't possibly know, especially, what's before the orign of universe? Christians like you and me simply accept the fact that a superior being like God exists to create a purposeful and orderly universe (ever thought of God as a super alien?, :-D ). I study science extensively, and an engineer by training. I would know about the limitations of science what it can and can not prove.

In the end, it comes down to faith. Believing in God, (which, for me at least, I often see it as the possibilities beyond our know universe, and the heaven, or the extra dimensions, where he resides), or believing in a system of scientific theories that is constantly being updated but essentially is a story that has no beginning and the end.

I did not see your previous question.
But all questions are "fair" if you are actually seeking an answer. If you are just asking to present your own views then it is not a fair question.

In a response to a your previous question the theory of the big bang has come out a winner on many points. the theory of superstrings knowm as M or Brane theory does not seem testable yet in any way.

The God hypothesis explains nothing and does nothing to increase our knowledge.

We might find yet that there is no cause and effect thing going on

The Idea that matter and energy can not be created from nothing has been shown to be false. (Alain Aspect) Time is not a constant and space might not be able to exist without matter. Dark energy is a puzzle and there are at least 4 theories of gravity.

It is a fair question. The evidence does support that the universe as we know it goes through natural cycles of contracting into a big crunch, where all the matter in the univers comes into one point, and then explodes out again into a big bang, and that there are several of these explosions nearby that we haven't detected because their too far out. Those adjacent explosions give off matter like our universe does, and some of it mixxes together forming new universes when the clumps are dense enough.

Were NOT saying we know everything about our universe YET but we we can change our opinions on it bc we don't believe in a book that tells us to believe in it. But this is the more logic answer The particles of matter that started the big bang came from smaller particles of matter, which came from smaller particles of matter which came from even smaller particles of matter.

You may say "were did the smallest matter come from" and that would be like saying what is the the smallest number you can think of.

To prove this take any # (ei:4) and then divide it by any other (ei:2) over and over again
4/2=2
2/2=1
1/2=.5
.5/2=.25
.25/2=.125
.125/2=.0625
Do this over and over again and then and you will see that it wil never end the # will just get smaller and smaller. This is why we cant tell exactly

Beats me. However, how did God come into existence? All by himself? Without any cause? Its just kinda idiotic to ask that unless you have somehow managed to explain the origin of God.

And if you are about to say that God has always been, then the singularity that exploded into the big bang had always been too. And if you tell me God is exempt from the laws of physics, I will tell you that the laws of physics weren't frozen until after the Big Bang. Do you see where this is going? Nowhere at all. It is a fair question.

No-one knows the exact answer to that but scientists are working on it. But just because no-one knows does not mean a god did it.

You see, over the ages man has tended to attribute anything he does not understand to be the work of god. When the plague swept through Europe, it was thought to be god's wrath. Today we know it was a disease.

Is that an intellectually honest answer?

Well...Personally I believe that science will one day find the answer to your question. In any case, does it really matter to find out how everything began? Or is it more important to act like good human beings respecting everyone as we're all the same, and learning positive things from differences? For me the second answer is the right one.
