You shouldn't be asking about the "best bloodlines," because nowadays people think bigger is better.

You need to find a pitbull that has been bred to be tempermentally sound, not human aggressive, and from parents who are papered and free and clear of illness, and have been health tested.

Stay away from pitbulls in the paper, or online. I highly suggest contacting a rescue to get a good pitbull.

By the way, "large heads, short and stocky" are NOT pitbulls. They are crosses that will usually wind up with health problems such as breathing issues, joint pain, hip problems etc. Do not be fooled into thinking "big head" = "great pit."

I'm not real sure what you are asking, so I will try my best-

American Pit Bull Terriers-registered with the UKC or ADBA. These are the "fighting style" dogs. Short, not real stocky, usually small(35 to 45lbs) UKC is a "all breed registry" like AKC, they also register coon hounds, working breeds, and most AKC breeds. ADBA is just for pits. This registry was formed by dog fighters, and still has ties to underground fighting rings, although there are good breeders of pits that use them. Look for weight pull titles and show(conformation) titles from breeders that register their dogs with these two.

Staffordshire Terrier- The "original" from England. Short and wide, this is the heaviest of the pit breeds realitive to height. When dog fighting and bull baiting was outlawed, people still found uses for this smart loving dog, and wanted to change the name to leave the bloody past behind, thus the Staffordshire Terrier came to be. This is the rarest pit breed in the U.S. Look for show and obedience titles in this breed. AKC also offers therapy dog titles and temperment testing.

American Staffordshire Terriers- AKC breed. Taller than the other pit breeds, stocky, big head. When the Staffordshire Terrier came to the US, besides fighting, they were used as an all-purpose dog on farms, which made people breed them bigger. Soon they looked like giant Staffordshire, so AKC and the breed club split the one breed into two. An AM Staff can not be crossed with a Staffy and still be AKC registered, it will be a mixed breed. Look for obedience and show titles. AKC also offers therapy dog titles and temperment testing.

Now, many breeders carry a "dual registry" on their pits. This is USUALLY an AKC Am Staff also registered as a UKC pit bull, but it could be a Staffy. ADBA dogs can also be dual registered, but the ADBA breeders frown on it. They believe they alone breed "true" pit bulls. All stud books are now closed, so if your pup was not born dual registered, it can't be at later date.

All four of these breeds are covered when a breed ban is set in place. Also commonly covered by breed bans are AKC/UKC bull terriers, both standard and miniture forms. These are the Target dogs, or Spuds McKenzie type dogs, also orginally used for fighting.

For actual bloodlines, you would have to decide which breed you want, and do research. I will say that York kennels is my favorite dual registered pits, and Yankee Staff has THE BEST Staffy's in the U.S., IMHO. Both kennels can be found be googling.

the best bloodlines = purebred parents with papers to prove they come from healthy bloodlines. that way you can be sure that you're not getting ripped off and you're not getting a dog that will develop unpreventable health problems during its lifetime, costing you lots of $$$.

DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE ASKING FOR THE BOOK VERSION. THE BEST BLOODLINES ARE ONES THAT ARE REGISTERED. THE ONE THAT STICKS OUT THE MOST IS "GOTTI". THEY ARE STRONGER, MORE PROTECTIVE, LARGER, BETTER MUSCLE DEFINITION AND STRUCTURE. HARD TO FIND THOUGH. I HAVE 3 PITS. A COLBY, REDNOSE, GOTTI.
