Go to a review site like citysearch.com and look for a salon that has a good rating. Then call and ask if you can make a consulting appointment or come down at least to meet the masseuse before making an appointment. I hate getting to the salon and meeting the masseuse and they are annoying. Also be very upfront about what you are expecting.. like no talking..etc. I like to spend at least half of a massage in silence because i'm there to relax.. If they seem like a good match, make an appointment.
I always believe that you should check things out before just blindly making an appointment. plus you'd want to see the massage room before to make sure you'd be comfortable in there.

First don't say masseuse- we bristle at that. There is a connotation of prostitution which is a stereo type we are still fighting. AMTA the American Massage Therapy Assoc. is a great resource for finding properly trained M.T.'s. Make sure they are liscenced. Find out about what kind of techniques they use and that they have had the education to back it up. Often times people will take a weekend course in a technique, that doesn't make them an expert and you don't want to be their guinea pig. Lastly massage for relaxation or stress relief is different than for injuries so know what you want going into the session. Not everything can be fixed in one session.

If you go to a good health club, you will find that they have good massage therapists. Also, some health clubs do not have massage therapists working for them, but, they usually can tell you some names of worthy massage therapists, and even give you some therapists' business cards.
