Why did he award it to Maher as oppose to anyone else? And why is Jimmy Ellis listed as a champ when Peter Maher was not?

Corbett announced his retirement and _someone_ had to be champ. Maher's opponent in that fight for the heavyweight championship was Steve O'Donnell, who also happened to be a sparring partner for Corbett. I'm guessing Corbett put his belt up for grabs just for the money, but that doesn't necessarily mean anyone else has to recognize the winner. The "alphabet soup" problem is in no way restricted to modern times. :)
