One possibility is a huge staghorn or calcified kidney stone could be blocking your ureter. A dye injection test and possibly a ct scan would determine if there is an obstruction.
You can function with only one kidney, but if the other were to become blocked or obstructed, it could cause total renal failure.
I hope you have consulted a urologist!

Well, if its BLOCKED, its due to a stone, cancer, aneurysm, inflamation, blood clot or trauma.
But 9 times out of 10 its a post-renal blockage due to kidney stones. Sharp, stabbing pain on your flank sides radiating to your back under your rib cage.
Go to a doc and get it checked out... Pain in that area + a blood test will figure it out really quick. CT Scan for confirmation (or ultrasound).
You're old and at risk for it. Dont wait - you could get sick and have to be dialyzed.
Regards,
Ryan
