Psychiatrists have been known to say that a large percentage of clients who come to them--are usually addicted to some substance---alcohol is high on the lists...they have been using these sustances to keep them selves calm---self medicating sometimes without even knowing it.They have been miss diagnosed for so long---that by then they have 2 problems-bi polar and substance abuse--bad place to be because then no one wants to treat them.....

One of my favorite drinks is a "wiseguy" which is black coffee and vodka...

The thing about coffee and caffeine is that your body attenuates (becomes used to) it. People say "caffeine has a diuretic effect!" but thats not really true... only in individuals who dont usually have caffeine does large doses have that effect.

So for some, caffeine almost becomes a maintenance drug and when they drink alcohol, it will still chill them out.

I drink coffee in the morning and I have wine or beers at night usually. Am I bipolar? Nope. I am a gemini though - so perhaps I am.

To answer your question: no.

Regards,
Ryan

Personally, no. I'm not a great coffee fan. Alcohol is anothe rmatter and many bipolar sufferers (particularly those not on medication 'self-medicate' with alcohol to take the edge of their impending manias and to drown out depression (BTW, alcohol is a depressant, but that doesn't mean it makes you depressed, it means it depresses brain activity - it slows you down).

I don't know when bipolar became a joke. It is not to families dealing with the condition.

Coffee is a stimulant and alcohol is a CNS depressant. They can trigger a very negative episode.

Yes but should avoid both, coffee is a stimulant, alcohol a depressent, both bad ideas for a bipolar, teas containing caffine are bad as well.

Those who are bipolar may enjoy drinking alcohol, yet seeing their not supposed to while being medicated it does not make it a very enjoyable or pleasent experience for those around them. Enjoyable or not it may be best to advise them to shy away and maybe focus on more sane extracarricular activities that dont involve manic episodes and taking peoples cars apart (cha.....if you read this you know what i mean)....lol

I'm bipolar, and yes - I like to drink - caffeine! Diet Pepsi is my fix.

On days that I am "Low" caffeine seems to be the perfect pick me up.

Why do you ask this question? Is there a reason?
