There is probably a genetic component, as well as how you were raised (even if you were raised "right," you might not have had proper socialization, or you might have had bad experiences interacting with people as a chid). I think (and this is just my personal guess) that when a child is isolated with one parent (e.g. a single mom and one child), that child has to fill a lot of roles for the mother and does not have the opportunity to learn good peer relationship patterns for two reasons: 1. the parent is isolated and does not model peer relationships, and 2. the child is busy interacting with the parent instead of peers. As a result, the child has a difficult time making friends, and once he/she realizes this is a problem, it's a negative spiral that gets very difficult around the teenage/young adult years (or later, if not resolved).

I have panic disorder high end of the anxiety disorder scale, however getting up in front of a crowd of thousands to give a speech or lecture doesn't bother me at all. Other times I can't cross the street.

Cause unknown and even worse, cure unknown.

Imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It's not your fault. I would definately go to the docs for a prescription.
