I'm been taking pills and using creams on my face for acne for about 3 months now and all of a sudden my scalp is terribly itchy, esecially at night. I can't seem to stop scratching. I don't have lice, but I'm just trying to figure out what the problem could be. Any idea? I'm guessing my meds, but how do I get rid of this problem?

My sister once took Accutane, a very potent acne medicine with dangerous side effects. I don't recall her scalp getting itchy, but I know her face got VERY VERY VERY dry and scaly. Perhaps that is what's going on w/your head.

Anything is possible.

Have you done any research on your acne meds? It is possible that dry skin/itchy scalp is a common side effect.

Just over a year ago, I quit taking some acne meds that a doctor prescribed to me when I became quite ill. I had been on Accutane. The medication had many negative side effects, but my acne was suppose to be "cured" if I could endure at least 6 months of treatment.... (I gave up in the 5th month).

The a few of the negative effects the meds caused included: nausea, blurred vision, itchy skin/scalp, hair loss, dry/cracking lips... After going off the meds, it took several weeks/months for all of the conditions to return to my "norm," including regular mild acne.

Although I loved having a clear complexion for those 5 months, I have reservations about subjecting myself to the negative turmoil once more.

If you are on similar meds, you may want to ask your dermatologist about special treatments you could use on your scalp.... I do not know how I would have ever survived those 5 months without the special lip creme my Dr. gave me to help me partially heal my cracked lips.

First of all are you just buying and using multiple products without medical advice? It could be dry scalp or even an allergic reastion, off hand I would say try taking a break from each for a bout a week and see if it makes a difference? Plus if you live in a cold climate and have started using the furnace more, that could be drying out the air so you notice it more and you may need a moisturizing shampoo.

My guess it that your on Accutane or generic version of it. These are strong acne medications that work well but can cause severe dryness of the face and scalp. If this is what you are on then the best thing do is to decrease the dose of the medication. Tell your Dr. about the problem you are having. Decreasing the dose usually works. Other than that use some head and shoulders, It will also help. Hope this helps

No,I really don't think that your Acne meds or creams has anything to do with your scalp. It might even be Dry Scalp or it could be the Shampoo&Conditioner your using.I know that I can't use White Rain Shampoo. It caused me itching. After,I stopped using it.And changing Shampoo&Coditioner I was fine. But,if that's not it.I'd go have it checked out.

yes, your acne meds stop your oil glands from producing, including the ones on your scalp. Use a dry scalp shampoo.

You are likely having a reaction to your medication.Stop them for a while and see if that is what it is.
