I have a 1988 ford bronco ll and have water in the oil , is it more likely that I have a blown head gasket or maybe a cracked head or worse a cracked cylinder . The truck runs real smooth, no misfiring. Is there any way I can tell which cause it is before I tear it down?

Probably a head gasket. The percentages are with this scenario.

I have delt with blown headgaskets before.. Is it antifreeze or just water? usually the Oil looks like a milkshake when its leaking antifeeze. I would pull out the spark plugs after the engine has been run for a 30 min or until the engine has pressure in the cooling system. then let the truck sit over night. then remove the spark plugs the next day crank the engine over a few times while someone watches for antifreeze coming out of the spark plug holes. It will pinpoint which cylinder blew out. But its almost impossible to tell if the cylinder has been cracked or head has been cracked until the cyinderhead is removed. Since this is an 88 you might as well rebuild the engine since the piston rings maybe worn out and other parts.

How did you find this situation? Was it when you looked under the oil cap and found phlegm type ooze under the cap itself? This may just be condensation even though this would be more believable if it were actually summer, lol. But if your looking at coffee type milky oil on your dip stick, then more than likely you are having head problems. That particular motor was very bad for the bronco- especially the tranny, lol. So you may wish to do what I have done with both of mine- donate it or sell it while it's still in operating condition. You will save tons of money in the long run. Hope I helped you. Jeremy

I work at a ford dealer and back when there were 2.9s we saw alot of cracked heads and can also be the front cover leaking into the oil, but either can have the truck run great but have coolent in the oil

There most likely is, but at this point a teardown would not hurt it.
If its not smoking then your head is probably fine, check your plugs and you might find a fouled one, is you do its the head or gasket, if not you might have cracked the block... good luck.

You've stated the right causes. A compression check on all cyl. will let you know which head to pull to find the damage.

I would use compressed air in the cylinders one by one as I while looking into the radiator for bubbles to determine which cylinder it was
