False. So far as I know, he wasn't particularly influenced by Stylites. Nonetheless, they have their similarities. Both of them tried to be monks, but due to their extreme austerity, they weren't really very good at it and essentially got kicked out (though Benedict eventually came back). They both went on to live their lives as hermits, though only Stylites was known for standing on pillars.

No. They were both holy men. If Benedict followed the example of anyone it would have been the Desert Fathers and John Cassian. Benedict was a student in Rome and later went to live in a cave. He founded a monastery in that place and later moved the monastery to Monte Cassino. He is called "Father of the West" because he used the 'rule of the master" to write his own "rule for monks" which came to be called "The Rule of St. Benedict". When the dark ages came upon Europe it was the Benedictine monasteries that preserved civilization.
