I have a 2 y.o who got many lovely pressies from relatives but seems to only play with a few. The buzz light-year is shoved into the toy box & the motorised car hasn't really been touched (the age on the boxes was 3+ so I guess thats a good guide).
His favourite is the Thomas trains and track. He loves to push the trains around and around.
He also has some little people vehicles that he likes to attach together and push around.
I'd say the simpler things for this age. Books, cars, lego (for the right age) and the other mentioned things.

Do they still make that toy called something like 'Simon Says'? It has 4 colored buttons and 4 tones. It flashes a sequence and you hit the buttons duplicating the sequence. As you successfully duplicate them they get longer. I think that it's a real good toy.

When my little one turned 2 I got her the Melissa and Doug cutting food set. She loved it! (and her friends who are boys do, too, so it's not a gender thing)
