My boyfriend just proposed marriage to me, but we will not be able to focus on purchasing a "real" engagement ring because of an upcoming surgery. I'd like to wear some sort of engagement ring on my ring finger. Does it look strange for a woman to wear a simple gold band in lieu of a diamond ring (we will eventually purchase a diamond ring)?

yes, it is perfectly acceptable. what is important is that yu have made a committment to each other, and if you want to wear a symbol of that committment in the form of a simple gold band, that is perfectly fine. this is YOUR relationship and whatever works for you is fine. I happen to know a woman who was married young when they didn't have much money and her husband made her a wedding band out of an old silver spoon handle. Twenty years leter, even though they are much more financially secure now, she still wears that ring because it is still a symbol of their love. Maybe you could find a unique but still affordable band at asecond hand store or pawn shop. or have your initials or something else meaningful engraved in the band to make it special to you. of course diamonds are nice, but your love is what is really important. just try to make it special to you.good luck and God bless.

It's absolutely ok. In some cultures in the mediterranean the wedding band is used as an engagement ring and worn on the opposite hand from that of the wedding finger, and upon marriage it is transferred to the ring finger on the other hand.
Congratulations and good luck with the surgery.

Really its up to each individual person now. I got engaged 2 years ago and for over 1 year was wearing no ring at all. My partner purchased me a diamond ring this year, but i wasnt fussed about it. If he hadnt bought me one at all until we married then i still would have been happy.

Tradition is up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I dont need or want a ring as proof of devotion or commitment. The love and support i have for and receive from my partner is really what counts the most.

It is a shame that marriage has come to be only as important as the amount of money spent on the ring. There was a time when a marriage was more than the mere sum of the wealth one has. Now, it's all about how big the stone is, how big the wedding is, how big the guest list is. Marriage is supposed to be a lot more than this. So, to answer your question, YES it's okay. And if anyone argues with you that it is not, remind them of the fact that a marriage is more than just a piece of paper saying you're married, or a paltry material thing.

There is no rule that engagement (or wedding) rings have to be diamonds. The ring is a symbol of your love, your commitment, and your intent. Whatever ring fits this symbol in your mind is the one to wear.

Congratulations, and I hope all goes well with the surgery.

for the past 7 years i have worn a simple silver band that doubles as my engagement ring and wedding ring. who cares what other people think? it is smart to wait until you can afford the ring you want.

(plus, as my husband keeps reminding me, the whole diamond engagement ring thing is just an extremely successful marketing campaign by De Beers, the world's largest diamond miner and distributor.)

Lets face it - girls love diamonds. Wear the gold band until you can both afford some bling.

My fiance is admiring her ring with much love at the moment....and she will be in years to come.

If its what you want then get it! I have a sapphire myself its what I wanted and because its not a diamond its quite big. My sis recently bought a ring from Bids.com she paid just over 200 and its been appraised locally at over 2000. Take a peek. If its not bids.com then its bidz.com can't remember

It's up to you,the ring is suppose to symbolize his love for you,not how much money he has or to impress your friends.Use a twist tie from a loaf of bread if you so choose.Just accept his love for you.
