What I mean by this is, what is good for self defense (to protect yourself) but also allows you win in the end against none martial art fighters.

Jiu Jitsu is pretty much the best style for one on one fighting. I only say that because it has been proven in the first several UFC's against every other martial art and every type of big and small opponent. Fighters now learn more than one style (which is better than BJJ alone), but that is another story. A much smaller opponent can break an arm/choke a much larger person easily with some experience in BJJ. If you fight someone with weapons, or more than one person, I would recommend Krav Maga. Israeli special forces use it. It is more real world fighting like police/marines use, but alot of it is assuming your in a life/death situation. Example:punching someone in the throat will end a fight, maybe even kill someone, but you never want to do that unless you feel your life is in danger. I'm not even sure they teach that in Krav Maga, but I'm just using it as an example.

Yes, I think Jiu-Jitsu was a branch off of Judo. Anyway, your asking two questions here. Answer to your first question is that Jiu-Jitsu can be effective as a self-defensive art, depending on the situation. But in my oppinion, Jiu-Jitsu is not that great in launching an offensive attack.

I believe it definitely is good for self defense. The good thing about arts like jiu jitsu is that you can safely train with them at just about full speed, and you will be practicing against resisting opponents. So if something works in the dojo, more than likely it will work in reality. This, opposed to doing techniques in thin air or learning things that you can't apply in practice, thereby not knowing if what you're learning will work or not.

If your looking for real good "Self Defense" martial arts that you truely need to use in real life for a real fight instead of practicing something liek Kung Fu or Karate for its show offy content then I recommend Judo. Those other martial arts dont help too much in real life situations since you really gotta think to get something out of it, in Judo you practice reactions and effects in the form of mostly some kinda of counter or throw that is easily executed by anyone of any size with little practice and some dedication. You'll also go through basuc counters for everything from someone trying to punch you to kicking you, to holding you and even in some cases to those with a weapon against you (such as a knife) I think unless youw ant somethign that looks flashy and can be somewhat effective Judo is a good way to go. Either way i dont know much about ju jitsu but I heard its somewhat similar? so if it involve some good counters to possible real life situations your good. But no matter what you take hard work and dedication always determines how effective it is later.

the difference is the name. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is brazilian jiu jitsu with the Gracie name in front of it. The Gracie's tend to teach more for self defense, while many other BJJ gyms teach for sporting aspect but also transfers over to self defense.

If your talking about streetfighting and getting in barfights or beating down people who annoy you then you should learn like a Wing Chun or a Kenpo Karate or boxing. If you want to just hit people first and hit then hard then you should do those, but if you want to defend yourself then jui jitsu. All the mma fighters are learning multiple arts though, muay thai, jui jitsu, and grappling.

Legitimate self defense is one thing, but you make it sound like kicking butt is some kind of leisure time activity. Your true learning will never go deep if that is your attitude. Consider taking a good, hard look at who you are.
