My pomeranian is white/tan and medium sized and resembles the pomeranians I see in pictures/postcards from 1914 etc.

Her brothers and sisters and mother/father are tiny like the pomeranians of today.

What causes a throwback? did she inherit her great great grandmother's genes?

You can't control when the 'throwbacks' will show up, or some variety called the 'crop-out;
In my breed, I had a gorgeous, unusually colored dog..I knew his parents and grandparents, and none of them were of his coloring..Then I got a pedigree with colors listed..there is was..in his great, great grandfather! Now, my dog sired 11 litters, and out of all of those, only one turned out his color..Sometimes you pray for a throwback, and sometimes you hope is doesn't happen! lol

Now, 4 generations back, there was a dog who was never shown, but produced 60 champions..I learned from a breeder who had leased him, that he was of ill temper, and unsociable (why he wasn't shown) well, after several years of breeding from his lineage, I did turn out with two dogs that were of that same, undesirable trait..However, there have been many that looked so much like him that other old time breeders have commented on them looking like him..(which was a 'good' thing to inherit)
So, sometimes you hope for it and sometimes you hope it stays hidden..
And that is the reason that a breeder studies pedigrees, and tries to get to know all of the dogs for several generations back..

just like humans dogs traits and genes can lay dormait for many generations. For example your parents and grand parents all have brown hair and you husband and yourself are dark haired but give birth to a red headed child...Come to find out your great great grandfather was from ireland and was a red head. IT happens. So just like your little furbaby, mostly her mother and fathers genetic line shared some of the same traits that arose in your lil baby.
