This option is in my manuel for my DVD camcorder, and I did not utilize it before recording on the DVD. Did I make a huge mistake? Will my data be erased once finalized? ....Oh, what does "finalize" mean anyway? 1000 points for the best answer! (well, maybe not 1000......)

Finalizing a disc means that you are saving data permanently on a DVD. Once it is finalized, it cannot be recorded over or erased.

If you don't finalize a DVD, it will not play in other DVD players.

You can record over a DVD-R if it is NOT finalized (all the data on the DVD will be recorded over with the new data).

Hopefully this explains it all.

Formatting a DVD is for storing Computer Files, not for recording movies or audio.....

Finalizing a disk closes the disk so it can't be written to anymore.
But Finalizing that disk makes it usable with any DVD player out there, rather than just your DVD player/burner you burned it on....

Finalizing does not erase anything....
