Technically you don't, in the military they are trained to sleep with their eyes open

the eyes are the window of the mind , so sleeping is technically shutting down your brain and relieve it from working and closing the eyes is just like cutting off the power from the brain so it won't interact with outside world.

and by the way why do you want them to be opened any way?

I think your eyes would dry out being open for an entire night and that would damage the delicate mucous membranes in our eyes. Also it's an automatic nervous system response for your lids to close and your chin to drop as you go from an awake to sleep state.
