We just had a lot of snow here, and I have a small miniature pinscher (shes 8 lbs). She refuses to pee outside! I bring her out when she tells me she has to go, and she just stands there shivering, walks around a little bit, and by the time 3 min or so have passed, shes freezing, lifting up her paws, and she still has not peed! Does anyone have any ideas as to how I get her to pee outside? I have thought about the boots for dogs, but do they insulate the feet as well? How do I get her used to the boots? Shes 3 years old.

I forgot to add... I live in an apartment, so the grass outside my back door is in a common area.

If shovelling a path for her doesn't work, then you might want to try potty pads...that is if you don't mind her doing her business inside the house. My chihuahua uses them in the winter months. He will absolutely not step foot outside in winter. You can buy them at any petstore and most dogs take to them quickly. Oh and I had no luck with the boots...I just couldn't put him through the torture of getting used to them.

shovel a small area in the snow so she sees the grass. The problem is the snow is too close to her belly and it stops the urge (picture yourself sitting in the snow and trying to go) She also isnt used to the feel of snow on her paws. THe boots might work but if she feels the grass she will probably be better.

I also have a 3 year old min pin and he is the same way and we also got a lot of snow today i had to shovel a path for him to walk around in the back yard until he found a spot he wanted to pee in it took me about an hour to get him to go. I let him out and he would not go so I shoveled more and then he finely went. I wouldn't mess around with the shoes I tell him to get the squirrel and he usually takes off running out the back door unless its raining then he won't go out

I have a toy breed of dog, a Pug, and each time we have snow I have to dig a luge in the yard for her so she will pee. She has to be able to smell the sweet earth or the pee will not come out! So get busy and dig a doggy path to expose some ground. Most of the dogs I've seen with boots spend a lot of time compensating for them by kicking and walking funny. The better investment for a min pin would be a snuggly sweater or coat since they can lose body heat so fast. Best of luck to you and puppy!

try digging out some of the area where there used to be grass and see if that helps. I never had poblems with my dog. He loved the snow. Good luck. If your dog isn't peeing then you might want to take it to the vet, it's not healthy to hold it in and it might be a symptom of something more serious. Better safe then sorry. Good luck.

For her Chiuhauha's, my aunt kept a covered area so there would be a place to go without having to squat so close to the cold stuff! I suggest clearing away a patch of snow for your minpin to use. Its hit or miss with the boots, some dogs take to them, and some just tear them off.

Apt? Definitely clear a patch for her to use.

Then you pee in the snow and show him how it's done, and write him name in the snow,He would get a kick out of that..

I can't answer your question but I can tell you that you are lucky to be able to live in a place where it snows. I have been exiled from my northern home and now live in a place where it cannot snow. And I miss my home so much sometimes.
