Why are all the dead deer by the side of the road females? Is it because females should stay off the roads? Would they rather comit suicide than give in to those horny stags? Or is it that any dead buck gets picked up by hunters who try and disguise the tire marks and pass it off as a prize kill?

Although my question is worded in a tounge and cheek manner, it was a genuine question we asked ourselves. We drove some 800 miles around Wisconsin and saw tens of dead deer by the side of the road and all of them were does.

This is for a couple of reasons.
Does 99% of the time move ahead of bucks. There are also more does than bucks in the woods.
If I saw a dead buck on the side of the road with the antlers still on,you bet I'd stop and get em.You can't eat the deer 90% of the time after it's been in a vehicle accident, and it's not worth taking the hide because it's usually pretty banged up,so why let the antlers go to waste? You can make a bunch of stuff from em',from handles to buttons.

Well I don't know about WI but I hunt here in MI and I can tell you that the ratio of antlered deer to antlerless is about 20 to 1. Only 1 in 20 deer have antlers. This does not mean they are all does. Young bucks do not grow antlers till they get older. Once they do grow antlers they are sought by hunters and taken out. I do see bucks dead along the road occasionally but I think often some one will take it for the antlers. Many people collect antlers to hang in the garage or barn.

I think that your last answer might be a little true. I saw a deer with it's head CUT OFF on the side o fhte road the other day. I assume someone wanted the antlers. That and I believe that there might just be more females than males. Other that..... no idea :D
But then again this wasn't a very serious question...

The deer that are seen dead on the side of the road are not necessarily all DOE, it depends on the time of year to determine if the deer are BUCK or DOE. If you cant see antlers, it is possible that the deer is a BUCK that has not yet grown its antlers. Although some deer tend to relocate, not just one sex does the relocating.

(1) Doe population is massive compared to the buck population. Simple math tells us that the chance increases when the available number does.
(2) Doe's are being chased by bucks during the rut. I'll admit that guys aren't thinking much during this time, but if he sees a doe he's chasing get hit, I'd guess he would turn around and go after another one.
(3) Doe's tend to move more and more in the open.

The does are less intelligent? I imagine the body and fender people are happy, anytime a car meets a stationary object, the dent is gonna be a major repair. Here in Northern Nevada the state has actually constructed underpasses for the deer because the roads cut accross their migration routes.

It depends on what time of year you saw them. Bucks don't always have antlers, so if it was after they had shed the antlers, you were seeing some bucks, but thinking they were doe.

It comes down to basic things. #1 there are way more does than bucks. #2 bucks as a rule move carefully and lest often than does.
