This person has a void within him that needs to be filled. I wouldn't call him an atheist. He's actually a seeker. With prayer, faith, and guidance he'll find his way with a little help from a friend.

Ok, If your friends does believe that there is a spiritual power out there then he is not an atheist as an atheist belives that there is no spiritual power. Your friend is on the right path to awareness. If he is willing to learn about other religions then he obviously has an open mind which is essential in learning the complete truth. As for a label, the problem with the world now is that there are labels for religion. I have studied Cristianity, Judaism, and Islam which God has pass his message in 3 chapters. For one to only read one chapter is to only know a incomplete story of how to preserve humanity. My label is simply "a believer." Your friend is a keeper.

Hmmm, I would say one of these or most likely a combination of these:

atheist (lack of belief in God)
deist (belief in God as solely a creator)
agnostic
secular humanist
Unitarian [Universalist]
spiritualist

Well, I hope you will have the opportunity to talk to him more & become friends and later on be able to discuss religion/spirituality together :)

EDIT: I disagree with Toweleeie on all atheists believing that there is no spiritual power, as I have talked to atheists who have told me that they see God as life or love or the spirit in nature etc. but not as a deity, if that makes sense...There are definitely a lot of spiritual atheists as well as non-spiritual atheists...So I think it is very possible to believe in the existence of something spiritual and still be atheist/agnostic.
^hope this helps! :)

Agnostic

Clearly agnostic at this point in his life.

It wouldn't be so weird to be with an atheist, it's just a matter if your beliefs mesh well or you don't mind that they have differing beliefs.

He would either be a Deist or a Freethinker. The two are similar, but not really the same.

Educated enough to know that religions are godless businesses and to seek God on a first-hand basis. You can call him one of the elect for that is what he is.

Maybe agnostic would be the better word? Why would it be weird to live with an atheist? The fact that you like him a lot should be enough. ;)

i would call someone like that un-righteous or wicked. Like the good book state in the days of Noah people were just doing everyday things. That did not make them bad. But they refused to listen to Gods Representatives. Of course they were swept away. So a person can choose not to believe but yet because of their own decision and attitude or "heart condition" they can suffer the consequences.
