What are the advantages to eating a raw egg over a cooked one (ie Rocky)? I know raw eggs can contain disease, and I would never try it. But I was wondering how this body-building practice became started.

The belief is that cooking an egg changes the proteins in it, "damaging" them so that the bodybuilder (who is usually fixated on protein) won't get the full benefit of egg protein.

It's bunk, really. The "proteins" that we eat aren't taken into the body as complete proteins. They are broken down into amino acids which the body then builds up into the proteins it needs. But science never got in the way of a good rumor, and bodybuilders want as much protein as they can eat, often, which is usually too much. Our basic need for protein is 10% of our calories. Anything more than that doesn't build muscle, it becomes fat. As it does with too much sugar, the body will turn it into triglycerides and store it for later. Bodybuilders, however, generally believe in "if a little is good, more is better," and so they look for ways to get much more protein, including raw eggs, because raw must be better, since it's in the natural state and hasn't been altered by cooking. There's no evidence for that, but bodybuilders are human, and thus are a superstitious lot who will believe what other bodybuilders say, even if it's wrong. It's a common human condition.

I think you answered your own question--Rocky, that's where it started like you say raw eggs can have salmonella (although I have personally cracked them raw in my protein drinks for years with no side affects) but they are very beneficial to most body builders and athletes because of their high biological value the yokes are filled with vitamins and minerals and the white part is a complete protein, all the amino acids.

They are clearly superior to cooked eggs for your health. They are so easily assimilated into your blood that they typically don't leave anything in your intestines to contribute to constipation. Check out this delicious recipe for a raw egg and banana shake that I drink regularly.

A note about raw eggs: many people in North America have been conditioned to believe that eating raw eggs is dangerous because of the potential of being infected with salmonella. According to a recent study by the United States Department of Agriculture, only one in every 30,000 eggs is contaminated with salmonella. Although there are no statistics that tell us what the percentage is for organic eggs, you can believe that it is far lower. The healthier the bird and its environment and feed, the less risk there is of salmonella contamination. Personally, I don’t worry about this at all. People all over the world - particularly in Russia, China, and Korea - have been enjoying the health benefits of raw eggs for thousands of years.
