a Catholic priest seeking to serve in the US military as a chaplain, whether on active duty, the Reserve or in the National Guard, or to serve as a chaplain at a VA facility, must first obtain written permission from his Ordinary or Religious Superior. That permission is sent to the Vicar for Clergy at the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS). The AMS is the sole endorsing/certifying agent for all Catholic clergy seeking entrance into the military chaplaincy. Additional background information of the priest applicant will then be requested by the AMS from the individual priest. Upon a satisfactory AMS board review of the application, a formal request will be sent by the AMS to the appropriate Office of the Chief of Chaplains to initiate the military's review and acquisition process. Final determination on suitability is made by the military.

Great decision on becoming a priest. As for the part about being a Chaplin, you have to be an ordained priest or minister to go through the Chaplin training. I don't know if a Chaplin goes through basic training, but i do know that Chaplin's are a non-combative unit. Ask a recruiter for more information, or you can ask about how to get in touch with a Chaplin.

I can't answer all of your concerns, but I can tell you that Chaplains are officers, so you wouldn't go through "boot camp", but you would go through OTS, or officer training school. You will also need a college degree, probably in the line of theology. Talk to the recruiters for a better idea on the specifics.

I'm in the miltary and something you need to understand as a chaplian is you need to not only believe your religion strongly but you also need to have a strong understanding of every religion as well. You will have to speak to Muslim soldiers, Jewish soldiers, Wiccans, Atheists, etc. You also are responsible to talk to soldiers who have been raped, spouse abuse, and countless other tasks. As a chaplian you work long hours but are very well respected. You attend OCS, not OTS as hust hanging on mentioned. You also need a degree in Theology, without a 4 year degree you won't be considered for a Chaplian because you are an officer, officers are required to be college educated. I hope this helped.

Visit a nearby military base and talk to a priest. They would be glad to discuss their work. DOD website probably has a link to the Chaplain Corps.

first, you become a priest. then, you get permission from your Diocese/Archbishop to become a Chaplain. Then, you apply, and if selected, go to a truncated from of OCS( knife and fork school).
BTW.. Marines don't have their own chaplains. They use Navy Chaplains(and Doctors/medics)
