You cannot make absinthe because it is a distilled liquor. Unless you have a still, which is illegal in the US, so I'm assuming you don't. Adding anise flavor (think black licorice) or steeping wormwood in some grain liquorwill not result in absinthe, just a naaaasty tasting substance, because wormwood is extremely bitter (2nd most bitter substance in the world.) Absinthe (with the e) refers to the drink *with* wormwood, which contains the chemical thujone (which is NOT THC but a similar compound) and abisnth (without e) many times refers to a drink similar to absinthe, but without the wormwood, and is legal because of the absense of thujone...it's really NOT the same thing. I'm assuming you want the variety with wormwood, and here's the deal. I've read all over the gov's websites about this, and the short of it is that it is illegal to buy/sell in the US, but not to possess or consume.
So basically, you can have someone bring it in from a country where it is legal, or you can try ordering it online. www.eabsinthe.com is a good place to start. The only problem with ordering it online is that customs CAN seize it when it ships into the country. However, it is likely that everything will be alright, since I've heard numerous accounts of people receiving their orders just fine, most likely because customs has other things than a drink that is legal to consume and possess in the US to worry about. If however they do seize it, as far as I have read you won't get in trouble, you just won't get your product. The website I mentioned earlier will give you a refund or replacement if that happens to you, so that would be my suggestion.
It is really quite expensive to get, so if you think that numerous herbs and black licorice flavoring doesn't sound desireable, then maybe you should skip it. Also, the thujone WILL NOT make you hallucinate. You would die of alcohol poisoning long before you ever consumed enough thujone to have any effect (it is traditionally 68%abv). Its really more for the wormwood flavor than anything else. Any myth about hallucinating is false, or else due to the fact that at the turn of the century many batches of absinthe were contaminated with unsafe substances and chemicals. The actually effect is kind of like a tequila shot but different..
So why try absinthe? Well, it has a lot of history surrounding it, which makes it intriguing to some people. Also, the method of drinking it is quite the ritual; there are special perforated spoons and glasses and it involves sugar cubes and the drink slowly changing from green to milky white. It's mesmerizing. By the way, the method of drinking seen done by Johnny Depp in From Hell (the flaming sugar cube!) was invented in the 1990's as a marketing ploy by Czechs to make absinthe seem more exciting. The burnt sugar really just ruins the taste.
Hope that helped.

Absinthe is made by macerating various herbs in ethanol. The main ingredients are Anise and wormwood, but can contain several other herbs. The resulting concoction is then distilled, and then colored by soaking more herbs for a short period of time then filtered. In order to make Absinthe you must distill it. distilling alcohol is illegal in almost all countries and can be dangerous. It is very easy to import Absinthe but be prepared to spend about $50 and up. Absinthe is not as dangerous as it use to be and does not make you hallucinate, some people do get a little extra effect from drinking Absinthe, but the reason why is still not certain. I think it is just the different affects from all the herbs combined with the high alcohol content, something called the push-pull effect, combining stimulants with depressants I usually feel something extra I can not easily explain the feeling and it is different for everyone. Check out this web site if you want real info about Absinthe.

Absinthe is an alcohol that is derived from the wormwood plant. You cannot legally obtain or make true absinthe in the United States. However, you can get absente, which is similar, but is derived from a different variety of wormwood, which contains none of the chemical thujone.

its liquor made with wormwood. In the United States, Absinthe is not a controlled substance but its sale in bars and liquor stores is banned. Absinthe is still however legal to purchase and possess in the United States. In most of the European Union, Absinthe may be sold as long as it stays at 10mg of thujone. In Canada, Absinthe is completely legal, and on sale in some liquor stores.
its legal to buy it online:

Absinthe is a and alcoholic beverage..about 50-70% alcohol. Its "active ingredient" is wormwood which is I think an herb that produces some sort of chemical that *ahem* gives you an experience .
It's banned from bars and liquor stores but you can buy it online at http://www.absinthe.bz/ and it's not illegal in the U.S.
Let me know how it goes! And here's a little tidbit for you: "Absinthe derives its name from the Greek word apsinthion, which ironically, means undrinkable"....enjoy!
