try scanning in a higher resolution

Try searching for the issue on www.hp.com. But guess is the OCR just doesn't recognize a useable font. Try purchasing a newer scanner. the Canon LiDE models are small and pretty nice. You may need some OCR software.

Clean the Scanner Glass with a cotton cloth U can use Isopropyle to clean it and check if unwanted character are coming.
