We are in the Arizona/California area. It looked like a bark scorpion possibly.Stung my husband several times on his arm and his back around the shoulder area as he was lying on the couch. What are some warning signs that can be medically serious to watch for?

When was this? Usually, if there's going to be a reaction from a sting, it happens really quickly. If he's all right so far, you don't have anything to worry about.

Here in America, a scoripon sting is a lot like a bee sting. It hurts, but it causes a "problem" only if you're allergic to it.

There is one kind of scorpion in Arizona that can (usually doesn't, but it can) cause a serious reaction. There is antivenin at your hospital's ER, the only place that has that antivenin.

So watch your husband, and if in, oh, 15-30 minutes he shows no symptoms, he'll be fine. Uncom fortable, but fine. Give him Alleve or something. If he shows breathing distress or spreading redness or swelling, call 911.

I recently got stung on the back of my calf by a Bark Scorpion. I had been stung before as a child, always while running through the desert barefoot! Those stings felt like someone was holding a lit cigaret to my foot for about 12 hours.. I remember feeling slightly feverish once. This time however was totally different! I was stung while sitting in my chair. The bugger crawled onto my footrest. Immediately I felt the stinging sensation that started radiating and then almost electrical pulses. I took 2 Claritin and the strongest pain killer I had. I also called poison control and was told to monitor my symptoms and use cold compresses. The pain lasted a full 12 hours (no sleep for me that night) and the muscle was sore to the touch and flex for 2 days. I also got a full brain headache for about 72 hours. I felt lethargic for a couple days. This toxin just about kicked my b--t!! I am glad I didn't get worse and have to go to the hospital, as the new antivenem cost $40,000. per dose... according to a recent article about an Arizona woman being charged $80,000. for treatment. (see link) This is NOT an experience I want to repeat!!

A couple of days ago I seen something on the Animal Planet channel where a family lived in the Arizona area and 2 of their children had been bitten by the Bark Scorpian and one of the kids almost died. His eyes started running. They said this is the most common reaction to the bark scorpian bite.

If he were going to have a serious (i.e. life threatening) reaction, he'd likely have done it already. The key symptom of severe allergic reaction to look out for is anaphalaxis (spelling?), which is the closing of the throat from swelling. You can check webmd for other signs of allergic reaction.

He'll have a lot of pain and swelling in the area, the skin will probably flake and peel off for several weeks and it will be red. Make a mixture of meat tenderizer and water to make a paste and slather it on the stings and have him take some tylenol -- he should be fine :)

most scorpion bites as far as I know are not deadly
but can be quite painful
just watch for respiratory difficulty
any excessive swelling, high temperature
nausea or convulsions
if none of these are apparent then just treat the bites as you would any other sting, such as ants

He if his breathing slows down or he can't make out sentences. I would still take to a doctor or ER.
