Humanity is, interestingly enough, based on genetics. It's much less crucial to existence than being a person. If your brain is put in a robot body (so to speak), you're still a person, but you're no longer a human being. Point! There's little importance on being human, and thus humanity is merely an arrogant (well, at least to those that believe in extraterrestrial life) way of putting the qualities of being a person.
As for what it means to be a person, well, that's significantly more complicated. It deals with the level of ability to communicate and interact, and to think rationally in order to solve problems, something that is crucial in the development of and usage regarding tools (hence the early ancestors of man).

You mean "human" as in a different living being than "animal" or as figurative way of saying "compassionate"?
Being human is just realizing that you're all one in the same and your fellow being (human or not) is as miserable as you.
