I would have to say clove oil...but be careful with this. I had my wisdom teeth pulled and used it *liberally* and ended up highly irritating the inside of my mouth next to the hurting tooth. It totally works, though. Orajel tends to wear off faster. If using clove oil, you need to dip it in some type of cotton swap, etc. Don't apply it directly...put the cotton next to the area that hurts. It numbs fast so you'll feel better soon. Best of luck to you! Go to a dentist to solve the problem for good! :-)

You might like the taste of Orajel better, but both will work for you from what I understand about clove oil. It is a very strong smelling oil though, so anyone around you will smell it, and it can stain.

Toothaches are painful but can be prevented
by take suitable precautions. Avoid eating
food which will result in the formation of acid
in the mouth, brush teeth regularly with a fluoride
toothpaste. I found the information at

Once I had a toothache and someone told me to bite down on a clove, I did and it totally worked! I did have to have the cavity filled , but it kept the pain away.

If you're going to buy something then ask the Pharmacist to direct you to the best product. There is ONE brand (I've been told) that has the ingredient 'Eugenol', it has a red cross on the box. This will numb it really good but be sure to follow the instructions.
I will say, it's expensive compared to the other stuff.
