Personally, I think depending on your bone structure you should have straigt hair.
If you have a big bone structure, or you're perhaps thicker, I recommend giving your hair some body to it. Curls, or something. Not suggesting a perm, because that can damage your hair. If anyone takes this advice, I would recommend that you take a shower before you go to bed, and put your hair in braids with non-snag bands. They are usually black, highly flexible. I think this because if you have a bigger set body than skinny people, instead of having straight hair, and making your face look bigger than what it is, your making your face and body appear smaller.
If you are skinnier or appear skinny, stick to straight or wavy hair, Not alot of volume because then you can appear too skinny, and there actually is a thing as too skinny.
[ i know that's not the answer you were looking for, but for other people who are reading this, and have some issues, this would be good for them].
Now on to your problem, a good way to straighten your hair without a straightener, good question. I suggest that you use a thick shampoo. Something that will weight your hair down. I don't know ow much that can help you, but hey, it's worth a shot right? Be clear for things that include alcohole in it. You was straight hair, not dried up hair, that's why you're not usng the straightener in the first place. Or you just don't have the time to use one. If you do have the time, there's Manic Panic shampoo and conditioner, deep condition with the conditioner, great results after a week or two, and you can use a straightener.
However, if you don't have one, or don't have the time, as I said before, just use heavy hair products.

First off, get a round brush (the bigger the straighter your hair will be.) a blow dryer ( a narrowed nozzle, if you can find one) a silicone product if your hair is coarse or colored, and gel (aveda flax seed and aloe gel is my favorite -works like a charm and doesn't build up.) wash your hair and use a conditioner (a deep, but not too deep) then distribute the silicone, and then the gel, and let it air dry a bit -not too much. Clip up most of your hair but a section in the back. Small sections works best. Brush the hair over the brush and away from your head. Point the hair dryer down the length of your hair to keep the cuticle smooth and dry it completely. Any dampness will make it curl right up. do this all over your head the front of your head should be the last pieces. Occasionally I'll skip the silicone if it's not humid and put in a small amount of a sealer at the end. Lagoom is a fantastic product but don't put in a product with water on straightened hair.Good luck!

Chemicals is not the thing. And straightening your hair isn't good. For straight hair, try using lots of Amla Oil and Olive Oil every night. And then a wash in the morning. It will really add weight and straighten your hair out. Blow drying your hair isn't good for your hair either because of the heat. So lots of natural oils. And a good herbal shampoo. Indian stores have really good shampoos. Some salons or vitamin stores have henna shampoos that are pretty cheap. But Indian stores will have them for cheaper and sometimes better because they don't have the chemicals in them. Here is a great site to get more natural hair tips that are really simple and can be done at home with everyday household items. Hope this helps!

all you have to do is run a little bit of product (mousse, gel, or something like that) through your hair, then use a paddle brush (you know, one of thos big square brushes) and brush your hair straight as you blow dry it. if your hair has some fly aways after, you might want to use something like dove frizz control and you should be good to go :]

You a straightening gel. They help a lot. Also you can blow dry with a round brush; it will make the ends curl and it looks really cute!

they have a hair drier thats like a round brush and u run it through your hair, it takes a little while but it decreases frizz, straightens hair, and still gives it body.
