Regan did the amnesty thing in 1986, and as we see now, it did not work. It was going to be the one time fix, for the illegal immigration problem, and now 20 years later, look at the mess we have. So for those that have said, give them amnesty in some cases, why will it work now ?

That is just my point, in 20 years, we are right back here, but the numbers of illegal immigrants are much higher.

SittinPre, I like most of what you said, but if we give amnesty, how do we deside who has broken the law just a little bit ?

Besides the fact that mass deportation is even more unlikely than amnesty, if we secure the borders using a fence/ wall and then commence to deport those in our jails and committing welfare fraud, that will go along way towards reducing the amount that are already here. Granting amnesty to those who have a steady work record, no criminal record and never been on gov aid will not only allow them to stay and contribute to society in a positive way, but they will then be paying taxes on their own ss#s as well. The number of identity theft cases will be greatly reduced and we need a better screening process for those applying for benefit to catch the fake ones before benefits are even approved. I feel Amnesty would work this time but definitely none of this should be done until our borders are sealed and protected.

While you raise a good point with whether or not amnesty will work this time around, I must say that the only thing you must do is wait and see. Times have changed for one thing, so who's to say that it won't work. It could, but then again it also could not.
If you ask me, it's the whole system of becoming a legal US citizen that needs to be changed. It amazes me that so many fail to see that maybe it's the system that needs the change since it's got so much red tape and high processing fees that make crossing the border illegally look increasingly desirable and the only way they'll be able to start their life over.
Just give it a chance that's all.

It won't, everybody knows it. Amnesty is a tacit admission that currently policy is a complete, total, utter failure. By granting amnesty, the illegal immigrant counter gets reset back to zero. So after amnesty, we won't have an illegal immigrant problem, because all the law-breakers that came into this Country in complete disregard of the law will then be legal. Will it take another 20 years to re-accumulate illegals? No, much less this time around.
All you can do is speak with your vote and run the politician rascals out of office.

No, it won't work. It is just a bandaid solution and the problem will only be worse in far less time, next time. We'll be looking at this situation again in less than 5 years and it will be far more than the current 12 to 30 million illegals in the country. Yes, if amnesty is given again, I believe the USA will be a 3rd world country in less than 50 years.

1986 the illegal aliens we're given everything they cried for.Now any amnesty will be met with how can they go raid work sites. American just cannot afford another amnesty we're going broke the debts are piling up.Once they are legal there goes a lot of money not being sent back and Mexico will allow 20 million more to enter the country so that money keeps getting back there.

Of course it won't work, and it's not INTENDED to work ... the corporations want cheap, disposable labor, which means we'll get more illegals pouring over the borders ... and to hell with what ordinary Americans think ... big business has bought up our administration, consequently they do what they're told ... and what they're told is to make sure there's cheap labor on tap ... giving amnesty now is a real carrot for future illegal immigration, which is precisly what the greedy companies want ...

It will NOT work, we have been there and done that several times already....how many more times do illegals expect us to pass amnesty?? Look at us, Reagan Promised in '86 that it would be the last time. Now look we are right back at square one. The only difference is this time there are quadruple the amount of illegals....if not more than that.
I can guarantee if our elected "leaders" are stupid enough to allow amnesty, that in 15-20 years we will be right back at this point AGAIN.

It won't it will only cause more illegal problems and allow the ones given amnesty to bring in their there village. It will cost the US taxes payers $128 biillion.
This country could easily become a third world in less then 50 yrs.
Which means only rich and poor with no middle class.

Amnesty won't work. There are too many angry Americans now, dealing with this issue. American's are more informed now, and literally SEE first hand how illegals are affecting our country. Jobs are lost, and unavailable to a citizen trying to feed his family. I know, my husband and I went to New Mexico because we were tired of California, and my husband could not get a job, making $15 an hour, having 26 years experience in construction, in all facets, because mexican illegals were already hired and working in every shop in Sante Fe, and surrounding cities, making $9 an hour! We ended up in Louisiana, at their shipyard, where he made a decent wage, $18 an hour. Sante Fe was a beautiful land, but not anymore, it is poor, and ugly do to illegals stinking up it's air, and taking livelihood away from USA citizens. Go home illegals and fix your OWN country, and next time, elect somebody who doesnt try and beat up their new president!

It's not going to work. It would only encourage other to migrate north. It would only take the pressure off the Bush. He could say that everyone here is a citizen and leave the problems for the next president. It's a really bad idea.
