If "Joe Average" asked the question about how you would use $1,000 to change someone's life he might get a few responses. Does that fact that it's a major celeb like Oprah explain the response? Are we so taken with celebs that we await their every word and give their opinion too much weight? Has Yahoo! Answers changed it's focus? What do you think?

No, "Joe Average" wouldn't hv gotten as many responses. Obviously it was the fact that it was Oprah asking the ques that garnered that many replies. Just stands to reason that ppl would b more than eager to answer a celebrity, tho I don't see that as giving celebrities more weight when it comes to their opinions. As for Y!A...makes business sense that they would do something like this for publicity.

Funny you should ask. I asked a similiar question shortly after the Oprah question and I received ten responses on how someone would/has or is helping someone. I think the majority of those people honestly thought they were going to be picked by Oprah for a best answer or something.

Does it make me believe that Yahoo has changed it's focus or that celebs are having us do things we normally wouldn't? No. In all honesty, it makes me feel that there is so much greed in the world that people will do just about anything for money and fifteen minutes of fame.

Pretty sad huh?

Good luck on getting your answers...I hope you have a better response than I did!

It's all about the publicity. Sure, being a celebrity doesn't *hurt* Oprah, and it certainly attracts the eye, but I personally wouldn't overrate her reflections on community service. She has certainly made some great steps in the ways of social justice -- she is the public figure of philanthropy and charity!

So herein lies a problem: in order to help the needy (generally through non-profit organizations), the key to succeeding in helping these people is awareness. Do not celebrities hold the greatest power to spread this awareness? Unless a "Joe Average" were to get some publicity, obviously his work will go unnoticed and awareness will spread slowly. Obviously the media is the key to promoting philanthropic and charitable works.

I find this prospect daunting -- how am I, one such "Joe Average," ever to work up enough support to try making a difference in someone else's life when no one else will help me? No one else will know, and my efforts will be insignificant compared to those who have multitudes of resources.

I don't think that 35,579 people would answer the question for "Joe Average" but I do think there would be a decent response. Especially around the holidays when people are in the giving mood. In fact, I would respond to "Joe Average" and do, whenever I answer a yahoo question on-line.

I only listen to POSITIVE people, so YES, if Oprah has something to say, I may listen. Now, if Joe Average was a positive motivator, and I heard his offer, I would probably respond. Why not, that's $1000... Who's gonna say NO? And by the way, I would buy my 4 kids Christmas with $1000!!!

I don't know, I did not answer the question, nor did I read any of the responses. I would assume that as people are obsessed with celebrities that is the reason why...I find it ridiculous.
