want to get a spiritual tattoo, but I am having a hard time finding inspiration. I know I don't want something cliche or too mainstream, but I don't want anything wierd either. Does anyone have any ideas or tattoos that they want to share?

I have a tattoo of an Indian (Hindu) goddess on my body. I did not get this tattoo to show off or look 'cool', the reason why I got this tattoo is because she is very special to me; she's my life.
=o)

Spiritual tats should always mean more than any other kind. When people see them, they're more inclined to make a judgement of you, and why you got that tat. You need to make sure it's special to you. What I would do is google some old manuscripts of whatever religion meets your fancy. There are some fantastic illuminated manuscripts in Old English bibles. But going to the source for that stuff will find you with a unique tattoo that actually means a lot more than most of the ones you'll find off a tattoo wall.

First decide what you're looking for. Like me, as a norwegian I would like to have something from norse mythology. But I am also a buddhist, so I looked in old illustrated books on buddhism and finally I found what I was looking for. Or at least some symbols, which I put together myself.

So you should look at your heritage and your beliefs, go to a library or something, see if you can find some pictures or illustrations. You could also take the one you like and go to an artist(if you don't wanna draw yourself) and ask if he could create something. Also tell him/her a little about yourself and what that tattoo would represent for you :) Good luck!

I have a tattoo of my chosen deity (ishta-deva) Lord Shiva (Shankar Bhagwan) the Hindu God of Cosmic Destruction and Regeneration. He is represented by a traditional temple lingam-yoni with a brightly colored cobra (naga) symbolizing the rising spiritual energy (Kundalini Shakti). This is very similar to the same icon I worship in my city's temple. The lingam-yoni is an abstract non-anthropomorphic emblem of one monotheistic God manifested without form and carries universal power. There is also a golden trident weapon of Lord Shiva (trishula) which represents the creative, destructive, and preservation aspects of divinity. Above there is a black AUM symbol of the cosmic vibration and a red swastika or auspicious mark. These two signs are very sacred to Hindus. The custom ink work was designed by a guy with a 2 year college art diploma using my crude reference material. This tattoo has deep spiritual and religious conotations. I suggest you perform deep introspection and study. The perfect design will come to you.

This is the basic design elements of the tattoo. I used different sources to create the actual design so mine looks quite different and distinct from this one. I simply used this link to illustrate how this concept appears.

what means something to you? it doesn't have to be something traditionally spiritual at all. as long as it means something to you... the other day i thought about a spiritual tattoo and thought a salt shaker would be a good one (salt of the earth) it would be a good conversation starter. good luck in whatever you decide

How about a rosary around your ankle - you can design what kind of beads etc. does'nt mean you have to be catholic... you could have a cross dangle for a charm or another religious symbol.

Depends on your spirituality. :) I personally have wolf paws/face on the top of my feet because they are my totem animal.
