this sounds like a hiatus hernia to me, especially if it comes and goes, eat small portions regularly, but still see the doctor for advice.

1. A haematoma (blood clot due to injury for example).
2. Hormonally varying fatty tissue: some women have lumpy breasts and these can change with the cycle.
3. Could be a tumour, might be a cancer.
As the others say, can't be sure and not worth taking the risk, so get a medical examination.

Have you gone to the doctor recently? There could be many causes of this. The best man at my wedding had Hodgkins -he had to have his thymus removed (it is a gland in the lymphatic system) because it was the size of a grapefruit. It is behind the sternum (the middle of the ribcage, basically).
I do not want to frighten you in any way, but you should definitely see a physician - if there is a problem, it is better to catch it sooner than later. Hope this helps.

Get a mammogram, preferably one of the new kind (I believe they're an MRI kind. Less painfull, and more accurate)
Also, get x-rays and MRI's of the chest.
It may be a tumor, but those can be easily treated, and are (more often than not) benign (not dangerous).
Nonetheless, get it checked into. Better safe than sorry, K?

Also, my mom had a few smaller ones, and it turned out to just be calcifications.
Google that term.

Also, by invluding the word "sometimes" in your question, you imply that it changes size?
Kinda weird, but make sure that it's not a blocked lymph duct, or gland. (google this too.)

Good luck!

Ihad a lump removed from my breast a few years ago. If your lump is sore there is no need to worry as I was told a cancer lump has no pain. My lump was painful to touch and it turned out to be just a cyst tg. Best of luck to you. Hope everything will be Ok.

lumps and bumps should never be ignored

get to a doctore for a proper diagnosis, early detection can stop worry and if it is serious then treatment needs to be done NOW
DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER

Go to the Dr's immediately, it is possible it's a gland thats swolen, but these things are not the type of things you mess about with.
